Live Your Best Life

Mindfulness Matters

What is Mindfulness, anyway?

Most of us live life in our heads … thinking, planning, remembering. All the while, missing out on fully experiencing the moment we are in…whether we are with a loved one, a client, a patient, working on a project, spending time with our children, or enjoying the beauty in our own backyard.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor emeritus and founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, describes mindfulness as “paying attention to the present moment on purpose without judgment.” What’s so great about that? you may ask. Well, over time the results of practicing staying in the present moment are numerous.

In recent years mindfulness has been studied scientifically and has been found to be a key ingredient in stress reduction, positive health outcomes, and overall happiness. The benefits that come from a regular dedicated practice are cumulative and life-changing. The list below only scratches the surface.

  • helps relieve stress

  • treats heart disease

  • lowers blood pressure

  • reduces chronic pain

  • improves sleep

  • alleviates gastrointestinal difficulties

  • improves mental health issues (such as anxiety, depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, OCD)

  • improves concentration and focus

  • promotes greater overall life satisfaction

No matter what motivates you to begin your practice, mindfulness will help you wake up to live your best life and experience your life more fully. For those who have had significant trauma it is recommended to begin this practice with the support of a therapist or trauma specialist who knows your individual circumstances. Regardless, each of us can benefit from practicing mindfulness in a supportive and caring community.

”Mindfulness isn’t difficult. We just need to remember to do it.”
